“SIGN
LANGUAGE and STORYTELLING:
A Winning Combination”
Recommended for “hearing” audiences,
including English Language Learners and people with special needs…
|
“Barbara’s ability to communicate with people of all ages
– hearing or deaf – is truly remarkable.”
- G.W., Geriatric Social Worker
“Once upon a time in America...at the turn of the 20th Century…”
Comparing the immigrant experience: then and now...
(Programs tailored to incorporate specific neighborhood history.)
Step back
in time as Barbara takes on the role of a “schoolmarm” and
transports audiences back to the day when school was “taught to
the tune of a hickory stick.” Using stories, songs and traditional
circle games we learn about the lives of everyday folks, how they got
through the day without modern medicine, electronic devices and the like…
“My
4th graders and I thank you for taking us on a fantastic journey…You
are not only knowledgeable, fun and entertaining but everyone was fully
engaged. The students play THE FARMER IN THE DELL every day! You are a
terrific storyteller, a wonderful person and we loved every minute spent
with you.” M.C., Astoria, NY

“Telling
Tales” through the Spoken Word and StoryART
A workshop modeled after The Hmong Story Cloth (Pa’ndau) offers
students the opportunity to learn how cultural values and traditions
are transmitted from one generation to another. As they come to
understand and recognize how families, communities, and countries
preserve tradition through art, they develop a new range of
“visual literacy.”
Grades 2 thru High School

“Barbara has redefined bilingual storytelling and given us much
to think about…new ways of listening to our colleagues, students,

”One
of the things I really liked about Barbara's style was how much she used
her hands…it really supported her telling. I felt like her hands
were lifting up the story, rolling it between her fingers and tossing
it to us to roll about and toss back. - M. Towne, New York University
Student (April 2007, Provincetown Playhouse)
